I was on a night reefwalk with the Waikiki Aquarium when a staff member spotted this beautiful night octopus gliding along the shallow reef, elongating its slender tentacles into crevices in the sandy bottom, looking for prey.
It started moving away from our group too quickly, so one of the badass Waikiki Aquarium staff members who showed no fear of getting inked or bitten, gently lifted the night octopus by its mantle and placed it in a bucket filled with sea water so that everyone in our group would have a chance to observe it more closely. The night octopus didn't stay in the bucket for long though and creepily crawled over the lip and side of the bucket back into the ocean, resuming its search for food. What an interesting animal to watch!
