Kona Coffee Mud Pie Ice Cream

I don't know about where you live, but here in Honolulu it's been warmer than our typical June weather. Usually the early summer months are still cool from the breezy trade winds but for the last week or so we've been experiencing that sticky humidity we normally get hit with in September/October. It's pretty obvious how hot it is just by looking at my ice cream pic. I literally scooped it from the freezer into the dish and had it out for barely a minute before it started to melt and drip. Shoot, how am I going to show you the marbling of my mocha ripple when it's liquifying like that! That's the breaks when you don't have a/c in the kitchen, so let's pretend it doesn't look so runny and messy okay, hehe!

I'm sure all of you know what a mud pie dessert is, and here in Hawaii we have Kona Coffee Mud Pie, Kona Mud Pie, or some variation of it that's made with a Kona coffee base. There's also a bunch of local shops that have turned the pie into an ice cream or gelato. It's one of my favorite choices when I go. That's why Kona Coffee Mud Pie Ice Cream was at the top of my list of ice cream flavors to make this summer.

The ice cream base is pretty straightforward. It starts off like your standard vanilla ice cream, then all you do is add spray dried instant 100% Kona Coffee granules (I'll notate in the recipe the exact brand I use and where I buy mine.) I also added those same instant coffee granules to the fudge ripple to make it a mocha one. The last addition was the chopped up OREO cookies.

I normally wouldn't eat this after 3 p.m. because I'm sensitive to the caffeine and it'll keep me up all night, but the air is stuffy and warm this evening. I figure it's summer, why not have a bowl. I've got Netflix!
