Bloodshot Dango Eyeballs
I had the idea for these bloodshot dango eyeballs from two Octobers ago, when I surprised my neighbor with some homemade ichigo dango for her birthday. I was too busy last Halloween to follow through with the concept, and I've been putting off making these eyeballs for the last two weeks. I'm glad I spared some time today to turn my eerie thoughts into reality!
These are a little time consuming to make but the instructions are pretty simple. I prepared the mochi balls the same way I did for the homemade ichigo dango, except after kneading the mochi flour mixture I added finely crushed freeze-dried strawberry slices to it. This strawberry "powder" creates red speckles in the white dango, giving the eyeballs a bloodshot look.
After skewering the dango eyeballs, I then piped on some smooth anko and placed a halved fresh blueberry on top. The last step is to roll the bottom of the dango in the remaining crushed freeze-dried strawberry powder. Doing this not only enhances the fruit flavor of the dango, but it also creepily resembles tissue and muscle found in the back of the eye. Like the eyeballs were just yanked from the socket.
I hope you all have a safe and spooktacular Halloween! I shared a tale of my most scariest paranormal experience, and if you're interested in reading it, please check out my 'This is personal' page.
